Description

The mission of the Leadership in a Multicultural Society series is to provide students with the fundamentals of leadership within diverse populations. Through intentional programs, students will develop a greater understanding of themselves, their community, and concepts that they can apply in and beyond the classroom and into their professional life.

Student participants will complete a six-week series that will increase their knowledge of basic leadership concepts through the lens of diversity and inclusion.

Expectations:  All students are to attend at least 5 of the 6 workshops and complete the required reflections.  All workshops are Wednesdays, 3 pm to 4 pm.

Week 1: February 1

Topic: Who are We, Identity Development and Awareness

This LMS workshop will explore identity development and awareness. As a leader, understanding ones identity is important in providing perspective. Discussions and activities will help students better understand themselves, those around them and how they interact with others.

Week 2: February 8

Topic: Introduction and Anti-Racism

This is a first step session that begins with the definition of anti-racism and discusses the difference between being anti-racist and non-racist. Attendees will engage in self-reflection on racist events where they were perpetrators or victims. Some participants may be brave enough to share their own experiences. The session will also cover allyship and the movement to co-conspirator.

Week 3: February 15

Topic: Disability Training

This week, LMS will focus on disability support training. Participants will gain perspective on disabilities that can help with creating an inclusive environment in their organization or community.

Week 4: February 22

Topic: Power and Privilege

This workshop will help students unpack the different components of power and name components of privilege.

Week 5: March 1

Topic: Fear and Empathy

Empathy is the ability to identify and understand other people’s emotions and it is a central part of being human. When we experience fear, the physiological response to the unknown, we become incapable of practicing empathy. This workshop, with medical anthropologist Dr. Abigail Adams, explores the ways in which knowledge bridges the gap between fear to empathy and can move us toward a more just and connected world.

Week 6: March 8

Topic: Systems and Structures of Oppression

Systems and structures exist all around us.  As leaders it is important to understand how these structures impact you, those you lead and the world around us.
