About
The purpose of Intercollegiate Athletics is:
- To develop an understanding and appreciation of intercollegiate athletics in American society and at IUP.
- To educate the student body, faculty, and alumni in the appreciation and enjoyment of intercollegiate athletics for the sportsmanship, respect for others, adherence to rules, ethics of the game, and democracy in action which can be promoted.
- To provide a focal point for the morale, spirit, and loyalty of the students, alumni, and friends; to offer a common ground where enthusiasm is shared by all and the university may be strengthened and united.
- To provide opportunities for students to develop their talents through a wide variety of individual and team sports suitable for different body types, interests, and needs.
- To provide trained and dedicated leadership for the optimal development of physical skills, team play, sportsmanship, healthful practices, and mental, moral, and emotional growth.
- To encourage the student athlete’s wholehearted endeavors in acquiring an education worthy of his best efforts.
- To provide adequate funds, facilities, and equipment within the college or university’s financial capabilities. Such funds should include income from all legitimate sources, so that there will be a minimum of outside pressure or infringement on other departments or programs.
- To evaluate continually the intercollegiate athletic program in all of its phases to ensure consistent adherence to the stated objectives.
- To apply the standards accepted by academic departments to all personnel who have administrative or teaching responsibilities in the areas of health, physical education, or recreation.
